1 ) What important discoveries were made during the rehearsal?
Within today's rehearsal, our aims were to begin improvising - based on our research of the mind, mental health, and post traumatic stress. To begin with, we took a section of the research (effects and symptoms) and improvised movement to music around these ideas. This was quite a difficult task considering we had little inspiration or developed knowledge- especially without a specific character, this was hard to visualize.
To spark influence and creativity, we watched examples of work by frantic assembly. This presented lots of physical theater based movement, the pieces particularly relevant to our performance included couples fighting and intimacy. The piece using a bed and a couple to show passion, yet in a difficult way (fighting), was exactly the style and type of movement we had envisioned for our own bed scene.
Taking this idea into rehearsals, we began to improvise contact work (on a chair at first) to represent Hero coming back as a ghost to Claudio - it's as though he's reliving a memory that he doesn't particularly want to experience or remember again. To represent and intensify Hero's power/ force (also overwhelming Claudio), we all played the character of Hero at the same time. Each hero represented a different emotion/ state of how hero felt towards Claudio, these included love, fear, despair and anger. Each of us took turns to manipulate and control Claudio, whilst at the same time fighting each other to be close to him. Our objective was to be close to Claudio, whilst his objective was to push Hero away and stop her from getting physically close to him.
Furthermore, within the frantic assembly video, there was a section where the man is pushed into a cupboard/ wardrobe by the girl- as though she's trying to escape from him. We decided to take and reverse this idea- perhaps in attempt to get away from the 'heroes', Claudio either puts us in cupboards or pushed us out of the room, trying to weaken her power/strength.
2 ) What led to those discoveries?
Without the research of post traumatic stress and frantic assembly, we wouldn't have been able to create the movement we devised today. The research was the platform in which we were able to develop from.
3 ) Towards where do those discoveries lead?
Gaining an insight as to the potential we could create if we continue working in this way, has made me realize just how important the research is! By having new material and ideas to offer the more possibilities we have to develop and explore our piece. Within the space of two hours, we have devised the structure of a scene- we are now in the position of taking these ideas and developing them further. Perhaps with more research we'd be able to take this to another level, adding in layers of information or links to other aspects of the play.
4 ) Consider questions No. 1-3 except focus on important roadblocks/dead ends.
Towards the beginning of our rehearsal, we felt as though we'd reached a dead end due to lack of research and no particular set idea of where we were heading towards- what direction we were aiming to develop our piece. Once we had some research we were able to base our improvisation and motive upon this, therefore leading us to begin creating movement with a purpose and outcome! From this I have learnt that the more research I do, the better and quicker we can progress through the rehearsal process.
5 ) Reflect on dramatic action and conflict. How’s it going? What actions does this suggest?
Through using different emotional states of Hero within the bed scene, we were able to create different dynamics and contrast. With a tense musical underscore, the audience will be able to see the passionate and romantic aspect of Hero and Claudio's relationship whereas the fear, anger and despair, show how the romance is being torn apart - the difficulties that their love presents.
6 ) Reflect on transformational leadership. How’s it going? What actions does this suggest?
We all took an equal leadership role within the rehearsal, we had lots of ideas to offer and experimented with each new suggestion- keeping all our options open!
